About this event

Follow the route taken by General Liam Lynch, Frank Aiken, Seán Hyde, Seán O’Mara and Bill Quirke on the morning of April 10th 1923.

Walk from the location of Houlihan’s House in Crohan before reaching the Liam Lynch Monument, the location where Lynch was fatally wounded. The walk will give excellent view points of the ravine which Lynch and his comrades climbed before being shot.

The walk will then depart the monument and follow the path back to Newcastle. Lynch was carried by a Party of Free State Troops under Lt. Laurence Clancy before reaching Nugent’s Pub, Newcastle the location where Lynch lay wounded and where he shared an emotional conversation with Lt. Clancy before he was transferred by ambulance to Clonmel Hospital where he died later that day.

The walk will be led by Local Historian Michael Desmond.

The walk has an elevation gain of 383m and has a continuous incline after leaving Houlihan’s before levelling out on the approach to the Monument. The route crosses a number of way marked trails including the Knockmealdown Way, The Liam Lynch Loop Walk and the East Munster Way. The terrain is mostly forest trails and paths before joining the public road near Skeaghatooreen.
