Crohan Newcastle Co. Tipperary – The Houlihan house provided a safehouse during the War of Independence and the Civil war on the Anti Treaty side .On the night of the 9th of April 1923 two of Liams party Bill Quirke and Sean Hayes stayed here and the following fateful morning General Liam Lynch and his party assembled here for breakfast .Who knows over the years who else had stayed in the house .Bill Houlihan who lived all his life here, was imprisoned after the Civil war and even when he got out of prison his house for some reason was kept on a watch list and often visited by the Gardai for years afterwards .Bill lived the quiet life of a small farmer after the war and died in 1986.He was buried with full military honours by the Army in the old graveyard in Newcastle.
