Hɪsᴛᴏʀʏ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ Dᴀʏ – 23ʀᴅ Mᴀʀᴄʜ 1923

A meeting was to be held in the Goatenbridge area, probably at Nugent’s of Poulatar, on March 15th, 2023. As neither the Dublin nor Cork brigades could make it to Goatenbridge the meeting was deferred to the Comeragh mountains for 23rd March.

On 23rd March 1923 the army executive of the IRA met in James Cullinan’s in Bleantis, near Kilbrien, in the Comeragh Mountains. General Lynch stated that the reason for the Executive meeting was that, Tom Barry, Tom Crofts and other officers had pressed Lynch for a meeting to consider the situation.

In attendance were:- Liam Lynch, Austin Stack, Frank Aiken, Sean Dowling, Humphrey Murphy, Sean McSwiney, Tom Derrig, Sean Hyde, Tom Crofts, Bill Quirke and Tom Barry. Also in attendance was Eamonn De Valera.

Absent were:- P.J. Ruttledge, Frank Barrett, Tom Runane, Tómas O’Sullivan and Seamus Robinson.

Frank Aiken was elected chairman of the meeting

Our Historical Bus tour will visit Bleantis on Easter Saturday 9th April as well as other locations visited by General Liam Lynch in his final weeks.
