Our Centenary weekend will kick off with a “Follow the Footsteps” Historical Bus Tour which will travel across the significant locations visited by General Lynch in his final days.

An important meeting of the Anti Treaty IRA executive was held in the Nire Valley in March 1923. Liam Lynch returned to the Nire Valley on April 6th before making his way to Newcastle on route to Araglen. Another meeting of the IRA executive was scheduled to take place in Araglen on April 10th, however on the morning of April 10th, Lynch and his comrades were surrounded by Freestate Troops on the Knockmealdowns outside Newcastle and Lynch was fatally wounded before dying later that evening in Clonmel Hospital.

The bus tour will visit the Nire, Bleantis, Glasha, Newcastle, Crohan, Goatenbridge and the Liam Lynch Monument before returning to Nugent’s Pub in Newcastle.

The tour will be led by Local Historian Michael Desmond who will give the historical context and the significance of each location visited.

The tour will take 4-5hours and costs โ‚ฌ15

Light refreshments will be served on return in Newcastle but a packed lunch is advisable.

Tickets go on sale on March 1st and are available in local shops or online at https://liamlynchcommemorationnewcastle.ie/
