The Liam Lynch Monument was officially unveiled on the 7th April 1935.

Crowds of over 7000 people travelled from all corners of Ireland to pay homage to their fallen hero, General Liam Lynch, Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army and one of Ireland’s greatest freedom fighters.

Despite the continuous thunder showers and pelting hail, huge crowds travelled through Newcastle before ascending the Knockmealdowns to the spot where Lynch had fallen 12 years earlier.

Below is a picture of a section of the crowds crossing the glen in Newcastle as they made their way to the Monument.

A Commemoration has been held in Newcastle by the Liam Lynch Memorial Committee every April since that day.
