RTE NATIONWIDE VISITS NEWCASTLE

As part of an RTE Nationwide programme on the end of the Irish Civil War, we were delighted to welcome RTE Nationwide to Newcastle this afternoon to record pieces at the Liam Lynch Monument and in Nugent’s Pub in Newcastle where General Lynch lay wounded.

The events which occurred in our locality on April 10th 1923 played a significant part in our Nation’s history as Lynch’s death marked the effective end of the Irish Civil War.

We were also pleased to share some of our committee’s memorabilia including letters dating back to 1934 in relation to the building of the monument with Donal Byrne of RTE.

Local historian Michael Desmond and Rose Condon of Nugents Pub were interviewed and the interviews should form part of a programme on the end of the Civil War which is due to be broadcast on April 5th ahead of the Centenary Commemoration.
