The Liam Lynch Monument was unveiled on the 7th April 1935

The Liam Lynch Monument was unveiled on the 7th April 1935. Over 7000 people arrived in Newcastle from all over the Country before climbing the Knockmealdowns, to the spot where General Liam Lynch had been fatally wounded 12years earlier. They travelled, many for hours, to witness the unveiling of the monument to honour their fallen leader.

Special Busses and trains were organised from all parts of the Country to transport the thousands attending and the timetables were published in An Phoblacht newspaper.

The crowds that descended upon Newcastle on a day with torrential rain shows the high esteem with which Liam Lynch was held amongst republicans from all across the country.
